If you want to use Android apps on the PC, there are several possibilities: We have compared for you the best methods to use Android on the PC. Update: We have updated the article and tried the Remix OS as well as the player.

AMIDuOS 2.0 brings a complete Android 5.1 Lollipop, with an extra Playstation to be installed on your Windows PC - whether Windows 7, 8 or 10. The first 30 days are free, afterwards a lifelong license costs 14 euros.

AMI has "tested thousands of apps completely" and continuous updates should ensure that even newer Android apps start without problems on the PC. 3D acceleration also makes Android games on the PC faster. You can even use your gamepad with AMIDuOS.

AMIDuOS emulates a complete Android tablet with homescreen, settings, sensors and touchscreen. Your Android apps can be displayed on the PC in the full screen or in the window. The shared clipboard allows you to copy and paste texts to the PC in the Android emulator and vice versa. A common file system allows you to access the PC hard drive from the emulated Android device and vice versa.

In the Praxistest on a Core i7 laptop with 8 GB RAM, AmiDuOS runs fast and reliably. The setup is easy and also the installation of the Play Store works in a Windows system very easily. You just need to right-click the Google Apps ZIP file and select Open in AMIDuOS from the shortcut menu. Click here for official instructions.

We also encountered difficulties: the emulator did not recognize our keyboard and used an English keyboard layout - poison to enter longer texts. In addition, the software keyboard has never been dimmed despite the input with a hardware keyboard.

Unfortunately, the user interface has not been adapted for use on desktop computers with mouse and keyboard. Instead, the interface looks like the default Android interface for tablets. Changes to the interface would have done the emulator well. Remix OS (bottom) has solved this more elegantly and quickly copied the Windows 10 surface. This should probably solve AMIDuOS with a preinstalled launcher similar. AMI spokesman Luke Lappala has already passed this proposal to the development department - but there is no movement a year later.

There was another problem with the playback of full-screen media in AMIDuOS: similar to the software keyboard, the mouse cursor was never dimmed and interfered in full-screen mode. The video playback has not been a whole lot of fun as Netflix's high-definition content has not been smoothed on the laptop resolution of 1,366 x 768 pixels. This resulted in a clearly visible staircase effect. The YouTube app did not play full HD streams on another laptop.

In AMIDuOS, you can hold individual apps in the app selection and drag them to the Windows-10 menu. This icon can also be attached to your quick start bar. So you get directly to the Android app that you wanted to run in Windows and for which you have actually installed the whole emulator.

Bottom line, however, AMIDuOS makes exactly what is to be expected. The emulator can be set up very quickly. It supports the Play Store and the important Android apps can be run with it under Windows. You can even start it directly from Windows, which makes the transition between Windows and Android apps seamless - but the full launch of the emulator and the app will take a few seconds. The speed of AMIDuOS was outstanding on the test system - apart from the crash - and the resource consumption is very moderate with less than 300 MB in RAM.

The Android BlueStacks Android emulator, which was once supported by AMD, has existed since the end of 2011 and the developers were able to collect a lot of experience in the field of Android on the PC during this time. The basic systems are either Windows or macOS. BlueStacks describes itself as an "App Player".

The installation is carried out via the installation program. Then start BlueStacks and log into your Google account. By the way, Bluestacks uses the old Android 4.4.2 Kitkat to emulate Android. BlueStacks is available as a tablet and shows a home screen after the start, where the installed and recommended apps can be found.

A navigation bar at the top is for navigation. There you switch between apps in Windows mode and calls the Homescreen. Between Homescreens, you can click and hold the key to move the cursor to the right or left. Pure touchpad operation is therefore somewhat cumbersome.

BlueStacks requires the hardware of a computer. When switching between Apps and Homescreen, the emulator likes to think of a thought-pause. If you want to gamble with BlueStacks games, it is worth it to have your own graphics chip, because the integrated graphics solution is sometimes not enough - on a MacBook it even led to display errors.

BlueStacks is either sponsored by sponsored apps, advertising, or a premium membership that costs $ 48 a year and removes advertising in the emulator.

There are blatant differences between the Windows and Mac versions. The Mac version has an older user interface, the taskliste at the top of the display does not exist. Games were not executable on a MacBook Air because the graphics chip mainly produced graphics errors.

Remix OS Player: The emulator for Windows

Remix OS Player is a separate version of Remix OS, which works under Windows as a kind of virtual machine. The user interface is identical to the stand-alone version, so you can find a UI optimized for laptops and desktops. Android Marshmallow is used here as an Android version.

Apps installed Your apps, purchased from the Google Play Store, are also available here. The biggest difficulty with the remix player was that it was not possible to familiarize the system with the German keyboard of the notebook. Even when everywhere "German" and QWERTZ was set, special characters were still placed on the American keyboard layout. Passwords can only be entered meaningfully if the virtual keyboard is always shown. For passwords like this may still be approaching, longer texts are so impractical to write.

In the test, the performance of the player is convincing: when idle, the remix player does not consume resources and apps like games run at decent speed.

The Remix OS Player also has a full-featured offshoot called the Remix OS. This is a fully bootable operating system that brings Android to the PC.

Remix OS for PC

Remix OS for PC is not an emulator that starts Android apps on Windows, but an alternative operating system. The developer team of Jide works on Remix OS for the PC. Meanwhile, it is quite mature and can be installed next to Windows on a notebook.

The installation is done after downloading Remix OS with an installer in the Windows environment. A reboot later and Remix OS is ready to go. Our test notebook was easy to connect to the WLAN. Although the setup assistant crashed on the first attempt to activate the Google Play services, but this worked out in the second attempt.

Remix itself sold with the Remix Mini PC a product with its own platform.

What's special about Remix OS is its desktop-optimized interface, which reminds a little of Chrome OS. It allows you to use multiple Android apps as on a traditional desktop operating system in windows. You can enlarge and move them at will. In contrast to the Remix OS Player, it is possible to set the keyboard layout completely in German.

For a real desktop feeling when using Remix OS, developers have integrated a tasklist and typical desktop and system apps like a file manager. New or old apps can be downloaded from the integrated Google Play Store.

The performance of Remix OS left nothing to be desired in our test. Remix OS is based on Android Marshmallow. Apps runs Remix OS without emulation, which leads to noticeable performance advantages compared to the emulator solutions. Even games ran smoothly on the notebook with its own Nvidia graphics card

Android on the PC: Conclusion

The emulator solutions presented in the test could not really convince. BlueStacks delivered a passable performance, but puttered on the Mac. In addition, a very old Android version is used.

The Remix OS Player showed some quirks. Above all, the incomplete keyboard layout makes it difficult for German users to use the system for more than experiments - office apps will not be fun. For this, the user interface of Remix OS is well adapted to the conditions of the desktop. AMIDuOS also suffers from the keyboard problem, but otherwise leaves a robust impression.

Remix OS is again not an emulator, but a complete implementation of Android as a desktop operating system. The system is nimble and appears qualitatively as the best option to run Android apps on a PC - with the hook that it needs to be booted.

Ultimately, however, remains the question, what requirements an Android app on the PC has. Many services are also possible without the emulator detour on the PC - WhatsApp has a PC software and many apps have web services. The emulators are hardly suitable for gaming. Remix OS, on the other hand, scores with good performance, but is likely to be a way to help age-old PCs and notebooks to a new life.
