You want to know if your Nexus or Pixel has the latest software? Or you want to install on your Nexus the Android update itself? Then you will find all the sources and flash instructions you need to update your Nexus or Pixel smartphone or tablet. Update: The Nexus 6 and the Nexus 9 are EOL.

Check the available Android version for Nexus

As a Nexus owner you receive a security update from Google every month. Your smartphone automatically checks every day whether there is a new Android version. However, this is not shared at the same time for all users. You have in the settings> Via the telephone the entry Systemupdates and can initiate the search manually. If the update has not yet been released for you, this method is useless.

End of updates
In addition, Google is waiting for a list of Nexus devices with their "last [n] guaranteed [n] availability of Android version updates". You can find them in the Google Nexus Help Center. Navigates to "When are Android software updates available to me?" And there to "Nexus devices".

The Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 are at the latest update at their end of life. From now on there are only security updates. Ars Technica had officially confirmed this to Google. The regulation is formulated as follows:

Nexus devices will receive security patches for at least three years from the first availability, or at least 18 months from the last availability on the Google Store, whichever is longer.

If your device is still there, take a look at the so-called factory images. They give you an idea of what Android version is really up-to-date for your Nexus. Agrees with the conditions of use in which you will be informed of a possible loss of data. Then tap on the name of your device to get to the list with the current firmware.

The main distinction of the versions you recognize by the build number. Matches this with the one installed on your Nexus. You can find them in the Settings section About the phone. If your Nexus has a different version from the lower end of the table, you can expect an early update. To get it earlier, you can also install it manually. You will learn the methods in the following sections.

... by OTA Image

Android updates are distributed by Google always "Over the Air" (OTA), but often you have to wait several weeks for them. Google also offers the OTA files but also officially downloadable, so you can flash them. The advantage of this update method is that there is no factory reset. The ADB tools you need nevertheless nevertheless.

The prerequisite is, however, that you have not modified your device. For example, if you are using Xposed, you have a Custom Kernel, Custom Recovery, SuperSU, or even a Custom-ROM installed, the OTA file will not be able to flash.

You can find the OTA downloads on Google's Developer page:

On this page, select the appropriate OTA file. Unpack the ZIP file, but does not copy it into the folder in which the ADB tools are also. Then, perform the following steps:

  • Turn off your Nexus.
  • Press and hold Volume Down and Power to enter the Fastboot menu.
  • Use the volume buttons to select Recovery Mode and press the Power button.
  • Once you see an Android robot with the belly open, hold down the Power button and briefly press the volume up button.
  • From the open recovery menu, select the apply update from ADB option with the volume buttons and confirm your selection with the power button.
Connect your Nexus to your computer using the USB cable and go to the adb-tools folder. Hold down the Shift key on your keyboard and right-click on a vacancy in the Explorer and select Open Command Prompt from the context menu by clicking on it with the left mouse button.

Now enter the following command and confirm with ENTER:

Adb sideload <filename> -ota.zip

The update is now installed. The entire process takes about 5 minutes. When everything is ready, you can restart the Nexus using the reboot system option in the recovery menu.

Tip for the command line: Just type the first characters of a file name or command and press the Tab key to complete it automatically.

... per Factory Image

The elaborate, but reliable way to install a new Android version on a Nexus is via the Factory Image. After this process, your Nexus is back in the delivery state and all data will be deleted. Your pictures, the address book and even the SMS and the call history must be saved first. Apps, however, will have to be reconfigured for the most part.

As a preliminary step, you need a debugging connection. How you set it up on your PC, we have explained in a separate, detailed article.

Then download the above-mentioned Factory Image for your Nexus smartphone. In parallel, you can create the backups and unlock your boot loader. How to unlock the boot loader, we have already explained in the manual, in which we install CyanogenMod on the Nexus 6P.

Note: For older Nexus devices, the flash command is not called fastboot flashing unlock but fastboot oem unlock.

Opens the download folder of the factory image and unpack the file [device-name] - [build-number] -factory- [code] .tgz (or similar) with a package program like 7-Zip. Opens the unzipped folder and unzips the file [device name] - [build -number] -factory- [code] .tar. Moves the contents of the [device-number] folder to the ADB Platform Tools folder, and double-clicks the flash-all.bat file.

The Factory Image is now installed on your Nexus. This takes a few minutes. When the process is finished, press any key on the computer keyboard to close the prompt. The Nexus does not complete the installation and then restarts.

If errors occur, you should first check the version of your ADB tools and, if necessary, replace them with a newer one. Furthermore, you can also flashen the images individually. Execute the commands in this order:

  • Fastboot flash bootloader <bootloader filename> .img
  • Fastboot flash radio <radio filename> .img
  • Fastboot reboot bootloader
  • Fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
  • Fastboot flash boot.img
  • Fastboot flash system.img
  • Fastboot flash cache cache.img
  • Fastboot flash userdata userdata.img

Beta Program: New Android versions received earlier

The Android beta program will get your future Android versions before their actual release. You can register your devices under this link for the beta. Authorized devices lists Google on the same page. Shortly thereafter, you receive an OTA update ("over-the-air") on the current betaversion.

Caution: Updates may contain errors that may affect the normal operation of your device. After the end of the program, your device will be updated to the regular release. If you want to back up to the stable version, all user data on your device will be deleted.

As an alternative to the OTA-based beta program, you can also download and download factory images of the preview versions, as described above. You can find the images for Beta 7.1.2 in this section at Google.

Google maintains its rigorous maintenance plan (see above) for the devices that had been sold 24 months earlier. Thus the beta 7.1.2 will only be available for Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Nexus Player, Pixel C, Pixel as well as Pixel XL.

Unofficial nougat updates for Nexus 5 and Co.

Does your Nexus belong to those who do not receive any updates? You still want to have new features and updates? In the Android community are offered numerous unofficial updates, which you can play with little risk on your Nexus. This results in data loss, which is why you should make a backup. And if the process goes wrong, you can make your Nexus work with the factory images (above) again.

Nougat for the Nexus 5 and other old devices

Officially Google may not develop a nougat update for the Nexus 5, but that does not mean that the smartphone belongs to the old iron. In the meantime, several custom ROMs are available for the 2013 top device.

The offer of nougat-based firmware for old Nexus devices is still growing. In most cases, it is still worthwhile to wait. Lineage OS is ready for more and more devices. The development of the other custom-ROMs based on nougat is to a large extent also completed.
