Huawei Mate 9 creates long-term joy

After nearly three months of continuous use, the Mate 9 is fun as on the first day. The long-term experience shows that Huawei is much for money ...

After three months of continuous use my judgment is quite unromantic: The Mate 9 is the fastest smartphone I have ever had. The pictures it shoots are very good. And the battery life comes close to what I was accustomed to from my old Nokia.

I've been using the Mate 9 since early November, so since its unveiling. It had then replaced my Nexus 6P as a daily companion. In addition, I have the Google pixel in use, but otherwise was and is the Mate 9 the home for my mobile and personal data.

Now I would like to share a few experiences with you that I have collected during these months. These are particularly ...

... the voice quality of the calls

First of all, the Mate 9 is a telephone. And as such, it pulls the first ace out of the sleeve. I sat at the time in the secret presentation to the Mate 9, where technical details on the audio and processor were betrayed. The experts present discussed how to improve voice quality and noise reduction even further. In the populated China certainly a big topic, but here in Germany I saw the theme rather relaxed. But at the first phone call on the Christmas market at Alexanderplatz, I understood what the engineers were talking about.

If you are talking to the Mate 9, it's like you're in your own office, in the car or in the telephone booth: How magically all the noises disappear and you hear your opponent as undisturbed. With no other test device was the voice quality so remarkably good. And I have not even VoLTE or something like that (which would support the Huawei Mate 9).

... the consistent performance of the Mate 9

In the same presentation it was also said that Huawei had implemented a learning algorithm for optimizing the file system. Terms such as "defragmentation" in the slides voted me stupid, since they do not make sense in connection with flash memory. Perhaps the marketing staff have worked on the powerpoint slides of the engineers?

In any case, engineers and marketing people were right: the Mate 9 remains fast. I've pretty much maltreated the smartphone in time; Apps installed and uninstalled or simply ignored. Images and never copied from the device, but simply left on it. Lots of music stored on it. The cache became full and full. This behavior forces other devices quickly to their knees. The Mate 9, on the other hand, does not even show prolonged charging times.

The algorithm is like a wife in the 1960s: bring me the slippers, the newspaper, the beer and the remote control, while I ask for it. Sexism is fortunately out and the metaphor is completely inappropriate, but the Mate 9 really behaves like that. The device is fun and obendrein morally not reprehensible.

... the bewitchingly good pictures it shoots

It remains: The photos, which come from the Mate 9, bewilder at first sight. In the second, however, errors occur. Especially the focus effect could be so cool, if he would finally recognize the edges correctly. The whole works like this:

In the focus effect, you set up an aperture, and then the Huawei Mate 9 software immites the behavior of a telephoto lens. This will only focus on a very narrow area, and all objects in front of or behind the subject will be out of focus. At first sight, such photos look stunning; The motif gains a whole new beauty, when everything in its surroundings suddenly blurs. At a second glance, however, one can see that the blur is the result of post-processing.

... the finally usable battery life

Recently, I went out of the office on a Friday and have fully charged the Mate 9 before. Then I went through the weekend and talked with the Mate 9, I arranged with WhatsApp with friends, bought BVG tickets, searched in maps for the next building market. When on Saturday evening about 70 percent of the battery was on it, I found that quite well. That after the Sunday still around 40 on it, I found also good. Only on the Montagnachmittag I put the Mate 9 in the office at the charging current - at 12 percent residual charge!

After 90 minutes at the PD port of the Anker PowerPort + 5 USB-C, the Mate 9 was full. To be honest, I have the supplied SuperCharge charger only once tried. The difference to charging at the USB-PD port was only ten minutes; Which was too small for me to sacrifice an extra socket for the Huawei loader. Luckily, this is soon a topic of the past with the dedicated fast-charging technologies.

Check and Mate?

Huawei has made with the Mate 9 really much right. Unfortunately, I look envious at my girlfriend, when she relaxes with the Xperia XZ in the bathtub and my Mate 9 must stay outside. Where should I just look?

Also I am annoyed about the Mate 9, if I pass my secondary duration test device Google Pixel and can do this with only one hand. I want to do this with the Mate 9. However, even after activating the one-hand mode, this does not work. Because the focus is then too high, so the smartphone wants to roll over the supportive pointing finger. But that would be unpleasant, because I want to keep the Mate 9 still a while.
